NINE

As Gage eased out from the trailer, he was assaulted by the acrid scent of smoke. He couldn’t see what was burning, but a small cloud of smoke drifted over from the other side of the trailer. Keeping flat against the aluminum siding so the police couldn’t see him, he went around to the back, where he’d left Alyssa.

She wasn’t there. His heart leaped into his throat as he scanned the area searching for her. Where was she? Had she run because of the police cars? He found himself hoping she had.

Ka-boom!

The ground shook and he stumbled over the duffel bags near his feet, nearly falling flat on his face. Where in the world was Alyssa? He peered around the corner toward the front of the trailer, horrified to see a squad car was pulling up into the driveway in front of the trailer. Two cops jumped out, but instead of going inside the trailer, they ran off toward the source of the smoke.

“Gage? Let’s go!”

Shocked, he spun around to see Alyssa crouched behind him. The pungent scent of gasoline and smoke permeated her clothes. “Are you okay? Did you start a fire?”

She flushed and nodded guiltily. “I’m pretty sure the pickup truck was abandoned. It was rusted through and all four tires were flat. Let’s go, we have to hurry!”

He wasn’t going to argue, since the two officers were preoccupied by the fire. “This way,” he whispered. He grabbed the two duffel bags and urged her to go first so he could protect her from behind.

They left the shelter of the trailer and, staying low, crept behind the police cars to get away from the construction site. Crossing the street was their biggest risk, and when Alyssa veered to the right, toward the parking structure about a block down, he followed her lead.

Her choice was a stroke of genius. Soon they were hidden within the dim interior of the structure, shielded by the myriad of parked cars. Silently, they wove through the rows to the other side. Alyssa didn’t hesitate but climbed up and over the waist-high wall, landing with a muffled grunt on her feet on the other side. Gage couldn’t help but grin with admiration. She was smart, constantly thinking even when running for their lives. He tossed the duffels over the low wall and then followed her to the other side. Although she’d taken twenty years off his life back there, he couldn’t deny her idea for a diversion saved them.

Still, from here on out, he wasn’t going to keep exposing her to danger. He wasn’t a cop like Jonah, but all those years on the move with his dad had taught him how to fend for himself. He’d wanted to protect Alyssa from the seedy side of life. She was a nurse, not a private investigator.

They kept moving, cutting through streets and taking alleys whenever possible. Gage tried to focus on his surroundings. They needed a plan.
